At Christmas dinner this year, the women in my family all got to talking about our bodies and what we would ideally like to look like. There was a ton more to the conversation, but the jist of the whole thing was that we all had a different idea of what the healthiest version of us looks and feels like. And instead of accepting these differences, it was a “I know you think you’re right but I know you’re wrong” situation. It was as though we could not agree on what a healthy person looks like.
And that makes sense; my healthy is not the same as yours. Being able to lift 60 pounds is not the height of most people’s health goals; for me it is. Each of us has our very own body and mind to take care of, and our own goals of what is our ideal image. Its also up to us to end the cycle of one-size-fits-all fitness plans, diets, and workout regimens.
Starting mid-January, 2015 I will be posting personal pledges from my peers to embrace their own meaning of healthy. Submissions are welcome as well; I want everyone to know and show that healthy doesn’t have a single face or body.
