For Christmas this year my mom got me a Clarisonic Mia. She and I are a little bit crazy when it comes to skincare (as in, I got my first tube of anti-aging eye cream at 15). We figure why just start anti-aging when you’re aging; why not fight it before you start to get wrinkles. I have had it for a few days at this point and I can already tell a huge difference in my skin. The Clarisonic works not by spinning, but rather by jiggling the dirt out of your pores in a function they call "Sonic Cleansing". A spinning motion would cause damage to your skin, opening it up to bacteria and dirt, causing more blemishes. The sonic cleansing clears your pores while stimulating natural exfoliation, resulting in brighter skin, more even texture, and less visible pores. I could tell a difference in my skin immediately after the first use. I have an exfoliation brush that I had been using to wash my face, but this goes deeper than a handheld brush ever could. |
The Mia has a 1 minute timer built in. Instructions included tell you to spend that minute as follows
- Forehead (20 seconds)
- Nose and Chin (20 seconds divided)
- Cheeks (10 seconds each)
I don’t think I will ever need to use it for longer than the preset minute because I think at that point it would start to hurt. I spend more time on my cheeks (about 15 seconds) because that is where I break out the most, and take that extra few seconds from my forehead as that skin is more dry and less likely to breakout. DO NOT USE IT ON/AROUND YOUR DELICATE EYE SKIN!
I use it with Boscia Clear Complexion Cleanser, two pumps per washing. I did notice a change in the moisture level of my skin, however it came with a feeling of cleanliness I had never experienced. I needed a little more moisturizer but I think after a few weeks of use my skin will balance itself, as skin is apt to do. Initially the Clarisonic is bringing so much stuff out from deep in your pores, it will seem as though you’re seeing more blemishes. Once your skin has gotten rid of all that gunk and resurfaced itself, you’ll see the long-term difference in your skin.
The Clarisonic Mia retails for $99 at Sephora.com and comes in a selection of 8 colors. Unlike the original Clarisonic with its charging base, the Mia charges on a small pad that attaches to the underside of the handle. A charging cradle is available but the pad works just fine as you don’t need to charge the device every night. When you get it you have to charge it for a full 24 hours, but I took it off the base to use it twice during the initial charge and it was fine. The total battery life after a full charge is 20 minutes, which amounts to 20 normal washing cycles.
You will need to replace your brush head every 3 months, or especially it starts to smell! Replacement brush heads are available for different skin types from both Sephora.com and Clarisonic.com.
The Clarisonic Mia family has been expanded to include both the Clarisonic Mia 2 at $149 and the Clarisonic Mia 3 at $199. The 2 has a dual speed timer for more targeted delicate+universal cleansing and the largest selection of colors, and the 3 has three speeds for delicate to extra powerful cleansing.
The Mia comes with a 1-year manufacturers warranty, and you can tell it is a solidly made product. My mom has had her Pro for about 6 years now and has only ever had to replace the brush heads. I hope you will try the Clarisonic Mia for yourself one day, but if you're not ready to take the plunge that deep into skincare tools, try a gentle face brush like this two-sided one from Sephora!
