How many times have we been out drinking and made a huge mistake that could have been avoided if our phones were in a “drunk mode”? Thousands, millions, billions? I’m betting billions. With the level of technology available to us today, our phones should be able to save us from the inevitable drunk dial.
And now they can! Introducing the Drunk Mode app, available for both iPhone and Android. This is a very simple, very efficient way to make sure you don’t text your ex, don’t lose your friends, and find out where you left your keys last night.

Launched on April 16, 2013, the Drunk Mode app identified and handled some of the biggest phone mishaps that happen when drinking. The app does not connect to Facebook at the current time, instead going with the tried and true email+password combination. In order to have “friends” in the app, it will need to access your contacts. This is where things get cool.
You can create a list of blocked contacts, and once you turn on Drunk Mode you select a time frame for how long you will be out that night. The time choices range from 3-12 hours in increments of three, at this time there isn’t a way to make a custom time frame. Once you select your time frame, you will be notified that the app has your back! While in Drunk Mode, you cannot call or text any of these people, minimizing the risk of a disastrous drunk dial. Its one thing to wake up next to a random from the bar, another to wake up next to your ex who the last time you broke up went crazy and released a wild badger into your psyche and life. In order to turn off Drunk Mode, you will need to answer a math problem. You should be able to solve the math problem with pen and paper; the question is a high hundreds addition problem. I am unsure if you will get locked out after a certain number of attempts, but the point is, if you're too drunk to solve the problem, you ain't ready to turn Drunk Mode off. |
The app also allows you to share your location with your trusted friends. You will be able to see here they are in relation to you, in order to meet up or find the lost wanderer of the pack. On the safety side, this can help you find a friend you think might be in trouble or need help. It also can take the function of being a lost phone finder; if you can get to one of your trusted friends after you lose your phone, you can find it on the Drunk Mode app! The breadcrumbs function of the app shows you where you’ve been for up to the past 12 hours. This is kind of cool when you wake up the next morning wondering where you went, or wondering how in the hell you got home. Back to the lost keys I talked about earlier; if you lost your keys in a bar or got them taken from you by the bartender (not sure that happens in real life but ok), looking at the breadcrumbs from last night will be able to show you where you went last night. Hopefully that would make your search easier. |
I haven’t even gotten to the best part. This app? It’s $0.00. As in it costs you nothing, and will save you uncountable amounts of time, money, and bad decisions. You have nothing to lose, and everything to gain. The three features right now are awesome, but in the coming months there are gonna be even more bad ass accompaniments like a lipstick-sized BAC device, and the ability to call a ride directly from the app itself! The Drunk Mode app works better with friends, for obvious reasons. The team at Drunk Mode also wants you to have fun and be safe. They’ve teamed up with students across the country at various schools to be Drunk Mode reps, spreading the word and the news about this great thing we’ve all been wishing for. Check out the website to find your rep, and follow your school’s Drunk Mode Twitter for updates on the app and news about the bangin parties and bar crawls coming up. We also like to retweet funny drunken things, so if you like funny, we like you. Stay drunk everyone! |
